Are you thinking about moving to Genoa, Nevada, but aren’t sure what to expect? In this video, I'm going to give you the pros and the cons of living right here in this amazing area. We’ll look at everything from the location and outdoor trails to traffic so you can decide if Genoa is where you want to settle.
Location, Location, Location
As a native Nevadan and local realtor right here in the Carson Valley, I’m going to give you some of the great and not-so-great things about living in Genoa. We’ll start by discussing the top three reasons people love living in Genoa to give you a good feel for the area.
The first and most popular reason for living in Genoa is location, location, location. Genoa is nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is located just 15 minutes from Lake Tahoe. There are plenty of pine trees in this very small town with a historic feel.
Outdoor Trails
Now that we know about the great location, let's get into the second reason that people love living in Genoa: the easy access to many hiking, biking, and walking trails. Enjoy an early morning walk and watch the sunrise or an afternoon fall walk and enjoy the beautiful changing colors.
There are also numerous mountain bike trails for those of you with a more adventurous side. Genoa offers many trails right in its backyard, so the location is great and the trails are amazing.
Historic Charm
The third reason that people love living in Genoa is its historic charm. Genoa is Nevada's first permanent settlement and is home to the Genoa Bar, Nevada's oldest thirst parlor. On any given Saturday or Sunday, you can see numerous motorcycles lined up outside and the locals gathered around there, enjoying the beautiful summer weather.
The Genoa Bar has a great feel to it. We took our daughter there for her 21st birthday to have her first drink, and it's just a really great local historic place to enjoy.
The Cons
Now that you know about a few of the pros of living in Genoa, let's examine a couple of the cons. No place is perfect, so if you're serious about moving to Genoa, you've got to hear the whole scoop. First, did you know that Genoa has a wide range of wildlife? Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
Okay, just kidding. But they do have deer. Some of the locals think they're amazing and others think they're a nuisance. I've heard it's impossible to grow a garden where the deer want to roam. Other animals that are up in that area are bobcats, mountain lions, black bears, and snakes. It's all good as long as you're prepared while enjoying the outdoors in Genoa.
If you don't mind the wildlife, then you can probably handle the one weekend a year when Genoa turns into a zoo. The Genoa Candy Dance is a huge craft fair, candy sale, and dance that has been happening since 1919. There are over 300 vendors that attend this event full of food, crafts, arts, and music. While this two-day event is incredible, the one drawback to that is that traffic impedes the town while it’s here. So you have two choices: you can either join in on the fun or stay home.
